Role Overview
As a Special Care Support Worker, you will provide hands-on, in-home and community-based support to clients with varying levels of mental health and behavioural needs.
This role requires:
- Active engagement (not observation)
- Real-time intervention during distress or escalation
- Consistent reinforcement of routines and behaviours
- Professional judgment in dynamic situations
You are not there to “check in.” You are there to stabilize, guide, and build independence.
Key Responsibilities
1. Mental Health & Emotional Support
- Support clients with anxiety, stress, and mood regulation
- Apply coping strategies in real-time situations
- Reinforce emotional awareness and behavioural control
2. Behavioural Support & De-escalation
- Identify triggers and early warning signs
- Intervene during behavioural escalation using structured techniques
- Maintain a safe and controlled environment
3. Personal & Daily Living Support
- Assist with routines (hygiene, meals, organization)
- Build and reinforce consistent daily structures
- Support task completion and independence
4. Routine & Accountability
- Ensure adherence to care plans and schedules
- Maintain consistency across all activities
- Provide structured guidance—not optional support
5. Documentation & Communication
- Record accurate, timely progress notes
- Communicate clearly with supervisors and care teams
- Report changes in behaviour, risk, or condition immediately
Required Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Social Work, Psychology, Community Support, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Experience supporting individuals with mental health or behavioural challenges
- Strong understanding of de-escalation techniques and emotional regulation strategies
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in supported living or in-home care environments
- Training in crisis intervention, behavioural support, or trauma-informed care
- Knowledge of Canadian care standards and funded support systems
- Valid First Aid & CPR certification
